Public Transport and Taxi Operating Areas 公共交通工具及的士營運範圍
Buses, trams and light rail vehicles pick up and set down passengers only at designated stops or termini. Trams run along the northern coast of Hong Kong Island between Kennedy Town and Shau Kei Wan. Light rail vehicles run in Tuen Mun and Yuen Long, and most of their tracks and reserve areas are fenced off, with unauthorised entry strictly prohibited.
All public light buses are yellow. A green roof marks a green minibus providing scheduled services, and a red roof marks a red minibus providing non-scheduled services. You may hail a minibus or ask to get off wherever the driver is allowed to stop. Red minibuses may not enter roads with 'No public light buses' signs and are also subject to 'No stopping' zones that apply only to public light buses. Green minibus drivers may be permitted to stop in 'No stopping' zones on some roads.
Urban taxis (red) serve the whole of Hong Kong but cannot operate on the closed roads on Lantau Island, including Tung Chung Road. Lantau taxis (blue) serve only the whole of Lantau Island and Chek Lap Kok, including the Hong Kong International Airport.
New Territories taxis (green) operate in most of the New Territories, but not in Tsuen Wan, Sha Tin, Tseung Kwan O or on Lantau Island. They may carry passengers between the Air Passenger Terminals of the Hong Kong International Airport and certain districts in the New Territories. They cannot take passengers to urban destinations, except certain major infrastructures and railway stations via designated routes. 'End of permitted area for NT taxis' signs show drivers their operating boundaries.
Using Buses, Trams and Light Rail 乘搭巴士、電車及輕鐵
At a bus stop, queue and stand well back. Do not stand close to the edge of the footpath, stand on the roadway or block the pavement, and give passengers in wheelchairs and persons with disabilities priority in boarding. Wait until the bus has stopped completely before getting on. If there is no separate entrance and exit, let passengers get off first. Once on board, do not stand on the upper deck, on the staircase or beyond the yellow line near the entrance or exit, and do not talk to or distract the driver.
If you want to cross the road after getting off, wait until the bus has moved off and you have a clear view of the road in both directions. If the bus remains at the stop, cross well away from it, and never in front of or behind it.
To reach a tram stop on an island, follow the Road Crossing Code to the island. If there is no island, wait on the pavement until the tram has stopped and other vehicles have also stopped behind the yellow 'Stop' line. Never try to get on or off a moving tram.
Use proper crossing facilities, such as footbridges, subways and 'Green man' crossings, to reach or leave a light rail platform. Where there are none, follow the Road Crossing Code with extra care. Queue behind the yellow line on the platform, let people alight before boarding, and do not obstruct the door once on board.
Using Taxis, Public Light Buses and Private Cars 乘搭的士、公共小型巴士及私家車
Wait in a safe place, and go to a nearby taxi stand or public light bus stand or stop if there is one. Do not wait at double yellow lines, or at single yellow lines during the restriction time, because the driver may be unable to stop for you. Give a clear signal as the vehicle approaches. Do not step onto the roadway or try to get in until the vehicle has stopped and the driver has opened the door or knows you are getting in. If the vehicle stops on the other side of the road, first make sure the driver has stopped for you, then follow the Road Crossing Code to cross.
Where possible, get in or out on the pavement or side of the road. All passengers must wear a seat belt if one is fitted. While the vehicle is moving, do not distract the driver, touch the controls or door locks, throw anything out of the window or put any part of your body out of it. Where airbags are installed, keep a good distance from the airbag outlet.
In a taxi, give the driver instructions early so that they can be carried out safely. Do not speak to the driver other than to give instructions, and do not try to pay the driver directly while the vehicle is still in motion. To get off a public light bus, press the call bell (if provided) or tell the driver well in advance, and stay in your seat until the vehicle has stopped.
A private car passenger or taxi front seat passenger who must get out onto the roadway should first open the door a little, look all around, particularly behind, and listen, watching especially for cyclists and motorcyclists. When there is no traffic, get out, stand by the car and close the door quickly. Look all around again, then walk around the back of the car to the pavement or side of the road. Never open the door in a way that endangers anyone or impedes pedestrians, and do not leave it open.
Transport Arrangements for Persons with Disabilities 殘疾人士的交通安排
Visually impaired persons may bring a guide dog on board and can use tactile guide paths. Braille and tactile plates on buses, public light buses and taxis give the vehicle registration number and/or the customer service hotline. On some taxis, a talking meter announces the vehicle registration number and the total fare.
Mobility impaired persons may wait at the head of the queue, where a yellow international symbol of accessibility is marked on the ground, for easier boarding. Wheelchair users on a bus or light rail vehicle should park and lock the wheelchair at the reserved space. When hiring a taxi, including a wheelchair accessible taxi, crutches and wheelchairs are carried free of charge. Persons with disabilities who are unable to use public transport may use Rehabus.
Persons with mobility problems, such as users of wheelchairs or walking aids, and visually impaired persons can apply to organisations under the coordination of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service for a 'Certificate for Picking Up or Setting Down of Passengers with Disabilities in Restricted Zones'. After filling in the journey information and vehicle registration number, they can present it to the driver of a taxi, private car, private light bus or private bus to board or alight in a restricted zone. This does not apply on expressways or in 24-hour no stopping restricted zones, and no hazard or major disruption may be caused to other road users.
