Financial Needs in Retirement and Saving Early 退休後的財政需要與及早儲蓄
Being able to make ends meet while working does not establish that someone will have enough resources after retirement. Income falls on retirement, but living expenses remain, so individuals need to consider their future financial needs in advance.
Where they can afford to do so, individuals can start saving early to build sufficient retirement savings. The key question is whether the resources available in retirement can meet expenses, rather than simply whether income covers expenses during working life.
Limitations of Personal Saving and Family Support 個人儲蓄及家庭支援的局限
Awareness of the need to save and the ability to save are separate matters. Some people do not recognise the importance of retirement saving; others understand the need but lack the financial capacity to build sufficient savings. Adequate personal saving therefore cannot be assumed for everyone.
Traditionally, families care for older members and children are expected to support their aged parents. However, some retirees have no children to care for them, while families with children may lack the resources to provide adequate care. Having children does not establish that sufficient retirement support will be available.
Old-Age Poverty Risk and Retirement Protection Frameworks 老年貧窮風險與退休保障架構
Insufficient financial resources in retirement, together with gaps in personal savings or family support, may expose retirees to old-age poverty. This is a risk that some people face; it does not mean that every retiree will become poor.
These limitations explain the need for properly designed retirement protection frameworks to address old-age poverty risk. A person's current employment income or possible future support from children is insufficient on its own to establish that their retirement needs are adequately covered.
