Low Liquidity Investments 低變現能力的投資

Collectibles such as antiques, art, coins, stamps and diamonds may offer financial returns and enjoyment, but their markets are illiquid and transaction costs can be high. These investments require specialist knowledge and expertise, and auction prices can vary considerably.

The Nature and Returns of Collectibles 收藏品的性質與回報

Low liquidity investments include antiques, art, coins, stamps, diamonds and other collectibles. Owners often buy these items both as a hobby and as an investment.

Some collectibles have produced substantial returns in the past, and ownership can also bring satisfaction and enjoyment. However, liking an item does not mean that it will rise in value, and strong past returns do not guarantee future returns.

Liquidity and Transaction Costs 變現能力與交易費用

Liquidity means the ability to turn an asset into cash quickly without a substantial price reduction. Collectibles have illiquid markets, so even an item considered valuable may be difficult to sell promptly at the owner's desired price when cash is needed.

Transaction costs can be high, so the difference between the purchase and sale prices is not enough to establish the net gain. Net sale proceeds deduct transaction costs borne by the seller; calculating the net investment gain also requires deducting the purchase price and transaction costs borne by the buyer.

Auction Prices and Specialist Knowledge 拍賣價格與專門知識

Many collectibles are sold at auction, where prices can vary considerably. A high price achieved at one auction does not mean that the same item will necessarily fetch the same or a higher price when sold again.

Investing in these assets requires specialist knowledge and expertise. An interest in collecting can provide enjoyment, but it cannot replace knowledge of the items and their markets; investors must consider uncertain prices, low liquidity and transaction costs together.
