'Zebra' Crossing Markings and the Duty to Give Way 「斑馬線」的標記及讓路責任
A 'Zebra' crossing has black and white stripes, with zigzag lines on either side and a yellow beacon, usually flashing, marking its location. These markings are both orders to drivers and a warning that pedestrians may be crossing or waiting to cross.
Tell apart two situations as you approach. While pedestrians are waiting at the roadside, be ready to slow down or stop behind the 'Give way' line, watching particularly for children, the elderly and the disabled. Once anyone has stepped onto the crossing, you must give way.
Before slowing down or stopping, signal your intention to other drivers. Do not signal pedestrians to cross, because another vehicle may be approaching and they may not be safe.
The Zigzag Controlled Area and Traffic Queues 「之」字線控制區及排隊車輛
You must not stop on a 'Zebra' crossing. In the controlled area marked with zigzag lines, you may stop only when giving way to pedestrians on the crossing or waiting to turn left or right. A passenger or hirer asking to get in or out is not one of these exceptions.
Within the controlled area, you must not pass ahead of the moving vehicle nearest the crossing, or the leading vehicle that has stopped to give way to pedestrians. Never park, carry out loading or unloading, or overtake just before a 'Zebra' crossing. Also look out for pedestrians crossing across the zigzag lines, not only on the striped part.
In a traffic queue, stop behind the 'Give way' line and leave the crossing clear. If there is an island in the middle of a crossing, the parts on either side of it are separate crossings.
'Green Man' Crossing Layout and Signals 「綠色人像」過路處的設置及燈號
A 'Green man' crossing is marked by two rows of studs and yellow stripes, with traffic lights for vehicles and pedestrian lights for pedestrians. It may stand independently on a length of road or form part of a traffic light junction. You must not stop on the crossing.
The signals have the same meaning as traffic lights at a junction. On red, you must stop or wait behind the 'Stop' line. On green, you may go forward only if there are no pedestrians on the crossing and there is room for you to do so. Do not block the crossing.
Treating Pedestrians Properly and Failed Traffic Lights 對行人的態度及交通燈故障
Give way to any pedestrians on the crossing. The elderly, the disabled and children may need more time to cross, so wait patiently even if your light has turned green. Do not harass pedestrians, for example by revving up your engine or creeping forward.
If traffic lights are not working, vehicles do not gain priority. Slow down, or even stop as necessary to give way to pedestrians, and then proceed through the junction with extreme caution.
