Long-Term Investing and Evolving Risks 長期投資與持續演變的風險
MPF funds have an investment horizon spanning several decades, which exposes them to long-term investment risks. Assessing investments therefore requires attention to risks that may affect members in the future, as well as current performance.
ESG risks are one category of evolving long-term risks. Leaving them out of investment and risk management processes may harm members’ interests; a long investment horizon does not justify ignoring them.
Responsibilities of Trustees and Investment Managers 受託人及投資經理的責任
Within Hong Kong’s MPF System, both trustees and investment managers must consider material financial risks affecting scheme members, including ESG risks. This forms part of both their stewardship obligations and their fiduciary duties.
Their responsibilities include assessing how risks affect members and considering an appropriate, responsible response. An investment manager’s involvement does not remove the trustee’s responsibility, and ESG should not be treated merely as a matter of corporate image or charitable activity.
Sustainable Investing Covers Both Processes 可持續投資涵蓋兩個過程
Sustainable investing brings ESG factors into both investing and risk management. Considering ESG when selecting investments while leaving it out of risk management does not cover the full approach.
Using ESG Criteria to Assess Company Prospects 以ESG準則分析公司前景
Investment managers can assess an investee company’s performance against ESG criteria and use ESG factors as indicators when judging its prospects. This connects the company’s environmental, social and governance performance with investment analysis.
ESG analysis forms part of assessing material financial risks. These indicators inform judgement, but considering ESG does not remove the need to assess other material financial risks.
